NEW CULTURAL CAPITALS

The National Building Museum, Washington, DC

Proposal 2008
Project 2008-09

This exhibition and related programming explores an emerging trend—a series of remarkable initiatives in cities around the world to develop architecturally innovative campuses or networks of cultural facilities.

Departing from the traditional, sometimes forced, organizational alignments of gallery infrastructure and exhibition content, the concept for New Cultural Capitals depends upon weaving an independent path through the NBM’s series of adjacent galleries, with a sequence of custom tables stretching curatorial themes across gallery compartment boundaries. Gallery spaces left between the primary exhibition component (the tables) and the gallery walls are filled with complementary freestanding elements including thematic digital kiosks, which are designed to encourage interactive experiences and contextualize the exhibition content in concert with large graphic photomurals depicting the architectural and cultural situation of the featured projects.
