BREAD & PUPPET

Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue Art Museum, Seattle, WA

Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann, Bread and Puppet Theater combines sculpture, painting, music, dance and drama into political performances and landscape spectacles. Bread and Puppet has focused on issues from local New York City grievances of rent and rats to universal injustices of police brutality, human rights infringements, and nuclear testing.

Today, Bread and Puppet is located on a farm in Glover, Vermont where it continues to develop performances that respond to critical issues and concerns. The group conveys its messages through small-scale morality and passion plays, to larger protests, mock-circuses and pageants. Paper mache and celastic masks, painted tapestries and signs, and simple fabric costumes are made with raw materials that create powerful, moving, and sometimes revolutionary performances.
