FLL AIRPORT ART & EXHIBITION VISION PLAN
Broward County Aviation Department and the Broward Cultural Affairs Division, Fort Lauderdale Airport, Fort Lauderdale, FL
A new terminal at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport provides the context for a series of integrated public art projects, educational exhibition displays, and temporary exhibitions that engage visitors on multiple levels. The design/planning team worked as curatorial planners, defining art projects and contexts to inspire artists to produce work emergent from specific environmental conditions.
Working with a diverse group of stakeholders, Rice developed streamline diagrams to better understand pedestrian flows, clogs, and eddies. In high distraction zones, abstract and larger scale works were defined, while within bands of slower traffic and waiting, smaller more detailed projects were conceived. Exhibition solutions include hot-spot internet lounges, display bars, shared retail walls, information-rich gate podiums, tri-panel carousel displays, and interactive video walls. The design/planning team assisted in the selection of artists and collaborated with them to realize their works.
