BLOWN AWAY
Krannert Art Museum, Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, IL
This traveling exhibition features work by artists in a variety of media, each expressing an interest in explosive phenomena—from the intensity of an impending event to the sensation of release and the reverberations of the ensuing shockwaves. Participating artists include Michael Bell-Smith, Boym Partners Inc., Adam Cvijanovic, E. V. Day, Heide Fasnacht, Barnaby Furnas, Penelope Gottlieb, Pia Lindman, Sarah Pickering, Michael Rakowitz, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff, among others.
The design and organization of the exhibition confronts the idea of the sublime and its appropriation of art in a normative gallery space. In considering this issue, a strategy was devised that removes the neutral surface in which the art is normally placed and suspends it in open space. The organization of the exhibition embodies the atomized nature of the show, in which the individual art pieces are arranged according to the uncontrolled perception of the visitor and the proximity to other art works.
