Responding to Shiseido’s call to radicalize the idea of the cosmetic sales environment, this project proceeded in two separate phases of work, the first of which explored and developed diverse conceptual scenarios. Programmatic constraints were limited to the configuration of an abstract site: a 4m x 4m x 2.75m volume of space, interrupted by a large central column,and situated within a generic department store sales floor.
Diverse solutions range from explorations of skin/tissue performance to references to aircraft overhead storage systems. In response to Shiseido’s request to re-invent the cosmetic counter, the team stretched the limits of deeply regulated environments of Japanese department stores.
